Martyrs�?? Day South Sudan is observed every July 30. This day commemorates the death of John Garang de Mabior, who was a Sudanese politician and revolutionary leader. During the Second Sudanese Civil War, he led the Sudan People�??s Liberation Army.
Following a peace agreement, he briefly served as First Vice President of Sudan for only three weeks until his death in a helicopter crash on July 30, 2005. The date of his death became marked as Martyr�??s Day in South Sudan.
