Overview

About the event

The Sinjska Alka began in 1715 as a celebration of a significant victory over the Ottoman forces. The people of Sinj and surrounding areas successfully defended their town from the invading Ottomans.

To commemorate this triumph, they established this unique tournament, where riders on horseback aim to hit a small iron ring with a lance.

The Cetinska Krajina region??s local people created the competition. It has been held annually ever since, making it one of the longest-running traditions in Croatia. Over the years, the tournament has remained an essential part of local culture, symbolizing bravery and resilience.

The rules of the game were codified in 1833, emphasizing fair play and community participation. Participants, known as Alkars, must be from Sinj or nearby areas.

They dress in traditional uniforms and ride their horses at full speed, trying to spear the alka, which hangs in the air.

The tournament has also been a significant social event. It was held to honor visits from various rulers, such as Emperor Franz Joseph I and Archduke Franz Karl, adding to its prestige. Today, it continues to attract many spectators and serves as a reminder of the region??s proud heritage.
