National Presidential Joke Day dates back to August 11, 1984 when Ronald Reagan made a fairly unexpected joke during a sound check that would turn into a rather large faux pas.
The joke was a fake announcement toward the end of the Cold War, where Reagan said that he had �??signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever, we begin bombing in five minutes�?�. Although traditionally presidential soundchecks were typically kept private by the networks, this one got leaked.
