Overview

About the event

National Backflow Prevention Day began in 2021, started by Watts Water Technologies. They wanted to bring attention to the important role of backflow preventers.

These devices keep dirty water from entering clean supplies.

The company chose August 16 to mark a major plumbing disaster in 1933. At the Chicago World??s Fair, a large backflow event caused thousands of people to fall ill.

Nearly 100 people died after staying at hotels where contaminated water had entered the pipes. That tragic mistake led to big changes in plumbing rules across the country.

The day isn??t just about one event??it??s about what we??ve learned since then. Every year, workers install and inspect valves that stop water from flowing the wrong way. National Backflow Prevention Day helps more people understand why this work matters.

It also gives thanks to those who protect our drinking water. Schools, cities, and plumbing companies use the day to teach, train, and raise awareness. The goal is simple: keep water safe for everyone.
