Overview

About the event

Legacy Week began in Australia during the 1940s to support the families of military personnel who lost their lives or health in service.

Captain Stanley Savige established Legacy in Melbourne in 1923, inspired by the need to assist the families of fallen soldiers from World War I. The organization provided emotional, social, and financial support to widows and children left behind??.

The event, initially known as the War Orphans Appeal, became an annual tradition to raise funds and awareness for these families.

By 1942, during World War II, it evolved into what is now known as Legacy Week. Volunteers, called Legatees, played a crucial role in this effort, ensuring ongoing support and honoring the promise made by soldiers to look after their comrades?? families.

Legacy Week remains a vital part of Australia??s community efforts, helping over 43,000 beneficiaries, including children and those with disabilities.
